Stump Grinding Safety

Old stumps in the yard are unattractive, plus they can attract pests like termites. Removal is most quickly and effectively done with a stump grinder, a heavy piece of equipment. Safety is the main concern when operating a stump grinder.

Utility Concerns

It's common knowledge to use caution when cutting down a tree due to overhead utility lines, but underground utilities are also a concern once you are ready to remove the stump. Water and gas are the most common underground lines, but in some areas, electrical lines may also be underground. There is also the main sewer line for your home.

Your utility company can mark any lines that pass underneath or near the stump, with the possible exception of your sewer line. In most cases, your tree removal service will arrange for line marking several days in advance of the stump removal so your only task is to avoid lawn watering or anything that will wash away the utility service markings.

Location Assessment

Where the stump is located in the yard can also be a safety concern. Stumps that are near your home's foundation, an outbuilding, or a paved area are the biggest issue because the grinding equipment could pose a risk to these structures.

Grinding machines come in a variety of sizes from smaller ones that are pushed into place to larger ones that must be towed in. Larger stumps, especially hardwood trees, require larger grinders. Larger grinders have a greater chance of causing damage to nearby structures. It's a good idea to call in a professional stump service for stumps near structures, as the pros have the expertise and the equipment to prevent damage to your home, outbuildings, and paving.

Equipment Safety

One problem with renting a small grinder to attempt stump removal on your own is that most hardware stores and rental services don't provide much in the way of operation or safety instruction. Further, these small grinders are really only suitable for removing very small softwood stumps. Injury risks rise if you attempt to take out a larger stump or a hardwood stump.

Safety equipment is also a must. Not only are there large grinding wheels in use but there may also be flying wood chips. This includes eye protection, heavy work gloves, head protection, and proper clothing and footwear. Knowing how to properly guide the grinder into the stump is also necessary, as there is the risk of kickback.

Contact a stump grinding service if you are ready to remove an old stump from your yard.
